Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2009 July #1
Vickers, a science teacher who has shepherded students though local and national science fairs, offers practical advice for those who aspire not just to complete their projects but to win science competitions. After a brief introduction to scientific research and a chapter of "Inspiring Stories of Student Scientists," she encourages readers to choose topics related to their interests and discusses matters such as the research plan, the scientific method, rules of science fairs, record keeping, mentors, presentation of data, report writing, competitions at various grade levels, poster displays, and preparation for judging. The book is clearly written, and its page design, which includes the occasional photo, is colorful. The appendix "References and Searching for Information" gives a couple of brief, perfunctory nods toward the public library but concentrates on the best ways to find reliable information through an Internet search. A glossary, a brief bibliography, and a list of scientific supply companies are also appended. A useful resource for highly motivated students. Copyright 2009 Booklist Reviews.
