Content descriptions

Summary, etc.: "Determined to prove her worth as a budding archeologist, Ginesse Braxton vows to solve one of the world's greatest mysteries--to find the location of the lost city of Zerzura. Unfortunately, no man dares take the risk of escorting the resolute young scholar across the open desert. But on her way to Egypt, Ginesse engages in a daring deception: She will switch places with Mildred Whimpelhall, who is traveling to meet her fiancé. Years before, cynical adventurer Jim Owen will do anything to escape the dark secrets of his troubled past. Betrayed by the woman he loved and scorned by proper society, he agrees to carry out a danger-fraught task: escort Mildred Whimpelhall across a lawless desert to her intended. But Jim is about to learn that "Mildred" isn't exactly what she seems-- and the dangers they face together are eclipsed by an even greater peril: falling in love, against all reason, with another guy's bride" -- p. *Starred Review* As far as Ginesse Braxton is concerned, she is simply doing Mildred Whimpelhall a favor. Mildred has been seasick ever since leaving England, so convincing her to deport in Rome and continue on to Egypt by land makes absolute sense. Of course, if assuming Mildred's identity on the ship allows Ginesse to take advantage of the escort awaiting Mildred in Egypt to expedite her search for the lost city of Zerzura, well, she'll simply consider it a well-deserved reward. As far as James Owen is concerned, once he delivers Mildred safely to her fiancé, Lord Colonel Hilliard Pomfrey, the debt he owes Pomfrey will be paid in full. The only problem is that the Mildred James collects is nothing like the lady Pomfrey described. In fact, by the time James delivers Pomfrey's fiancée to him, Pomfrey may end up owing James. Brimming with wonderfully dry wit, infused with lush sensuality, packed with action and adventure, Brockway's spin-off of her popular As You Desire (1997) features one of the best romantic matchups since Hepburn and Bogart verbally duked it out on the African Queen. The title that launched Amazon's Montlake Romance line, this is simply sublime. Copyright 2011 Booklist Reviews.
