This vividly written first novel limns the prep-school life as it follows the fraught journey of Jason Prosper, struggling to achieve emotional equilibrium after the suicide of his best friend and sailing partner, Cal. After transferring to a New England boarding school for his senior year, Jason still grapples with his guilt over the part he may have played in Cal's death, since Jason's shame over their sexual relationship led him to badly mistreat Cal. In addition, he is dealing with the not-so-subtle hazing of his new classmates. His one solace is his friendship with fellow outcast and former wild child Aidan. But Aidan's suspicious death on the night of a wild party prompts Jason to take a closer look at his privileged peers and their insular ways. Although she sets the angst meter on high, and her plot is sometimes overwrought, Dermont shows real spark in her sensual descriptions of sailing and her realistic depiction of the malevolent dynamics among sophisticated teens, who seem to move in a rigidly hierarchical world ruled by competition, whether for trophies or friends.
