Kalah, Beth, and Britney are best friends, though their relationships are fraught with jealousy. Kalah is in love with Beth, but Beth only ever loves herself, a lesson Kalah painfully learns when Beth disappears on her eighteenth birthday, without a shred of concern for her friends or family. Shortly after Beth skips town, Britney disappears, leaving behind a suicide note, and third-wheel Kalah feels completely alone and confused. Rumors and gossip swirl in the wake of Beth's departure and Britney's suicide, and soon Kalah is digging deeper into both cases, which could either drive her crazy or lead to her own dangerous death at the hands of one of her closest friends. Though the story is occasionally unbalanced and Beth's powerful character often overshadows narrator Kalah, that sometimes feels like a purposeful choice for debut author Cooper. Given the scandalous nature of the plot, it shouldn't be surprising that there's some adult language and themes involved, though fans of Sara Shepard's Pretty Little Liars series will find it right up their alley.
