|Summary, etc.:||When a mysterious package is delivered to Robin Ellacott, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but no less alarmed. There are four people from his past who he thinks could be responsible, and Strike knows that any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on one of the suspects, Strike and Robin delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men. But as more horrendous acts occur, time is running out for the two of them.|

*Starred Review* For the Harry Potter books, J. K. Rowling created a fantasy character who embodied pure evil. In this third volume of her adult mystery series, written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith, she gives us a heinous real-world villain, a serial killer loose in present-day London. Private detective Cormoran Strike and his assistant, Robin, have become familiar to listeners of the previous two books (The Cuckoo's Calling and Silkworm, both narrated by Glenister), so it is all the more disconcerting in the first few minutes when a package addressed to Robin arrives at the office containing a severed woman's leg. Glenister brilliantly voices a wide cast of characters with a variety of dialects as Strike and Robin travel through London neighborhoods (both posh and seedy), as well as north to Yorkshire and beyond, in search of clues. Every nuance of emotion is reflected as these two continue to develop into full-bodied characters navigating tricky work-life balances as they stake out brothels, back streets, and high-rise apartments. What makes this recording stand out, though, is the way the listener is drawn into the point of view of the killer himself. Glenister's tone and inflection will chill the reader as he narrates this character's maniacal fascination with grisly acts, made all the worse by being voiced with calmness and steady determination. We recommend this recording wholeheartedly with one caveat: you may not want to listen after dark. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
