In this quiet pseudo–fairy tale, three sisters are rewarded for their generosity. In an introduction, coauthor Julianna Margulies explains that she first heard this story from her father, who would tell it to his three daughters when they were children. In the story, three sisters go to the zoo every Saturday with their dad, where they are given money for a treat. Instead of buying something for themselves, the girls buy food for the animals. Witnessing their generosity, a balloon man gives them each a balloon, and that night, the balloons take them on a magical journey through the sky, where they see animals, angels, and birds. The illustrations tie the story together, and each girl is represented by a different color (blue, red, and yellow), and these colors are echoed in the backgrounds. There are some religious undertones, and some younger readers may grow restless toward the end, but this modern fable is a lovely tribute to giving. Copyright 2014 Booklist Reviews.

Author Notes

JULIANNA MARGULIES is a critically acclaimed actress and producer. She is the star of CBS’s The Good Wife, for which she has won a Golden Globe and two Emmys. She has won eight Screen Actors Guild Awards, sharing that distinction with few other female performers. She lives in New York City with her husband and son.

PAUL MARGULIES wrote stories, essays, and plays, and was also an award-winning advertising executive. But his favorite role was that of a father to his three daughters, and he devoted much of his talent to writing them letters and telling them stories.

GRANT SHAFFER is an artist whose work has appeared in The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Interview magazine, among other publications. He lives in New York with his husband, actor Alan Cumming.
