Moerman is a recognized scholar in the field of Native American ethnobotany and as such has created a masterful online database called Native American Ethnobotany (http://herb.umd.umich.edu), which resides at the University of MichiganâDearborn and catalogs "foods, drugs, dyes and fibers of Native American peoples, derived from plants." The database averages nearly 100,000 visitors per year and is widely cited. This dictionary is an abridged edition of the print Native American Ethnobotany (1998), concentrating on plant foods. The dictionary is an extremely detailed, comprehensive, and authoritative listing of "the food uses of more than 1,500 plants by 221 Native American groups." Introductory material includes a list of the 32 food-usage categories in the book (from "appetizer" to "winter use food") and a list of the Native American groups that are mentioned. The book also contains an extensive bibliography, and each entry includes a link to the number of the bibliography item from which the information came and the page on which it appeared. Also found in the volume are separate indexes of tribes, plant usages, and common plant names. The material is technical and not for the faint of heart but will serve as a wonderful companion to the website. Recommended for libraries with patrons who have a need for detailed information relating to ethnography of food plants and universities where food and food history and ethnography are important.
