Ages 3^-6. A simple interactive book has fun with the act of reading and makes the preschool audience a subversive part of the story. Mr. Frimdimpny, a heavy, bossy, gloomy alligator, lays down the rules for reading this book: Do not laugh! Do not smile! If you do, you have to go back to the front of the book. Then various slapstick scenarios show animal characters in mess and mayhem--caused by the reader. You'll make the elephant sneeze if you breathe near the page, and then . . . Don't you sing or whistle, or the pink hippo in the glass shop will . . . Don't touch that spot on the waiter's shirt: it tickles him and makes him laugh, and all the food splatters over two pages. Stevenson's relaxed line-and-watercolor cartoons show the galumphing animal farce, and they leave lots of white space for the audience to jump right in and laugh out loud and be punished by having to go back to the front of the book to make the story happen again.
