Summary, etc.: | When six-year-old Layla gets lost at a departments store, she has to figure out what to do. First, she calls for her mom. Then she wisely asks another mom with kids for help. Together, they seek a store clerk to make an announcement over the loudspeakers. When Lyla is reunited with her mom, children will rejoice alongside her and emerge more informed and empowered as a result. With poetic watercolor imagery and a gentle approach, When Lyla Got Lost (and found) is an essential reminder that preparing and knowing what to do "just in case" is a great way to stay safe"--Page 4 of cover. |

Lyla and her family head to the air-conditioned mall to escape the summer heat, but a new toy distracts Lyla, and she becomes separated from her family. Frightened and unsure of what to do, she yells for her mother. When that doesn't work, she finds a woman with young children in tow and asks for help. A quick announcement over the store's P.A. system reunites Lyla with her mom, and both are happy and relieved to be reunited. This nonthreatening story effectively portrays the anxiety felt by young children when they get lost and uses the event to educate families about how to resolve the situation should it happen to them. The minimalistic line drawings and limited color palette focuses attention on the characters, and background colors are used effectively to heighten Lyla's emotions throughout her experience. Supplemental information includes newly developed five-step kid-friendly instructions for getting help if you are lost and a note to caregivers explaining the updated guidelines and basic statistics about lost children.
