|Summary, etc.:||Vegas PI Jim Bean is conned into leading a dangerous woman straight to her target.|
- Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2017 December #1
Cynthia Hodge is gorgeous and has a lot of money. When she tells PI Jim Bean she wants to hire him to find her missing brother, how can he resist? The problem? She's not Cynthia. She's just murdered Cynthia. She wants Bean to find Cynthia's brother because she's been in love with him since forever. She'll convince the brother to marry her and murder anyone who gets in her way. She is, of course, batty as a barn owl, but she badly underestimates Bean. He's a refreshing PI in the current world of sad-sack gumshoes. Though he hints at a screwed-up past, he just hints. His job is a perfect fit because his clients' misery "made his misery a little less . . . miserable." Early on, Bean comes to the shattering realization that all he's done is connect the poor brother with a crazy. Then the narrative explodes into conventional PI action, but the setup is so good, and the characters so hard to look away from, that most readers won't mind. All in all, a fine thriller.
