Arlo Finch and his family have just moved to his mother's hometown, in the mountains of Colorado, and it isn't long before Arlo realizes the small town isn't quite what it seems. First, he meets his family's long-dead dog, and then he sees a girl who disappeared years beforeâand this is only the beginning. In the course of the story, Arlo and his friends in the scout-like Rangers work together to overcome challenges that range from tying knots to fighting life-threatening dark forces. Cronin's third-person narration perfectly captures the sarcasm and bravado of an adolescent faced with a world that is suddenly not what he thought it was. He uses subtle vocal differences to distinguish between characters, from the gruff and gravelly voice of Arlo's uncle to the almost surfer-like speech of his friend Wu. The clean narration doesn't include sound effects or music, though chapter titles are announced. Fantasy fans will enjoy the mountain-scout twist on this familiar plot. Grades 5-8.
