Content descriptions

Summary, etc.: A parent's worst nightmare is Grace's deadliest case...Kipp Brown, successful businessman and compulsive gambler, is having the worst run of luck of his life. He's beginning to lose big style. However, taking his teenage son, Mungo, to their club's big Saturday afternoon football match should have given him a welcome respite, if only for a few hours. But it's at the stadium where his nightmare begins. Within minutes of arriving at the game, Kipp bumps into a client. He takes his eye of Mungo for a few moments, and in that time, the boy is gone. Then he gets the terrifying message that someone has his child, and to get him back alive, Kipp will have to pay. Defying instruction not to contact the police, Kipp reluctantly does just that, and Detective Superintendent Roy Grace is brought into investigate. At first it seems a straightforward case of kidnap. But rapidly Grace finds himself entering a dark, criminal underbelly of the city, where the rules are different and nothing is what it seems...
Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2019 June #1
Terrorism, torture, human trafficking, and kidnapping all figure into James' latest high-voltage thriller, the fourteenth in the Detective Superintendent Roy Grace series. Much of the action spans out from a truly gasp-inducing opener at a soccer stadium in Brighton, England. A pathological gambler and once-successful businessman whose daughter died four years previously suffers another loss at the stadium—his 14-year-old son is kidnapped. Grace, the senior homicide officer in Sussex, gets the case, based on the fact that he was at the game with his own son. Although this contrived maneuver to put Grace at the scene, and then in charge, feels clunky, James gains control quickly, blending, as he often does, race-against-the-clock tension with fascinating details about how a large police force organizes a multilayered response to a real-time threat. James sometimes throws too much at readers, as in scenes that aren't explained until later, but the overall effect is somehow always stunning. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
