Content descriptions

Summary, etc.: "After drinking too much at her bachelorette party, Maggie Trueheart wakes to find a stranger in her bed. To make matters worse, a phone call brings the devastating news that her friend Angie was murdered some time after they parted ways the night before. Kelly Delaney, who left the party early, is the first of Maggie's friends to face questions from Chicago homicide detective Ron O'Reilly. After taking a closer look at the other women who attended the party, O'Reilly concludes that at least some of them are lying. As the clock ticks down to the wedding day and more shocking secrets are revealed, the murderer zeros in on another one of the girls. Can the killer be stopped before there is another victim?" -- Provided by publisher.

In 1988, two weeks before Maggie's wedding, she and her friends get together for one last girls' night out. That evening, after the friends have gone their separate ways, one of them, Angie, is murdered. All of the women have secrets they are determined to keep hidden, but is one of them a murderer? O'Connell takes an exceedingly clever approach to the story, using shifting points of view to take us through the investigation. She also devotes chapters to some of the supporting characters, like the homicide cops working the case, and slowly reveals, a bit at a time, the circumstances that led to Angie's murder. Surprises and plot twists clear up one mystery, only to create another. The pace quickens, the victim's friends become increasingly desperate, and, when the murderer's identity is finally revealed, readers will find themselves gasping for breath. If even one of the book's myriad threads were to snap, the whole story might unravel. Thankfully, that doesn't happen, and readers will respond enthusiastically to this well-told tale of secrets, lies, and murder. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
