Gr. 3^-5. After a whirlwind tour of the U.S., Emily and her grandmother write and illustrate an overview of the country, incorporating parts of letters and postcards sent home and vignettes from their travel diaries. This fictional recap of their trip sets the stage for some facts about the states, each of which is given only two pages of limited coverage in the form of such tidbits as names of famous people, quotes, historical and literary highlights, and food specialties. State maps with little detail and decorative illustrations are featured on each double-page spread. The book concludes with a list of places to obtain more information; a list of facts, including the state birds, flowers, trees, and nicknames; and the dates of statehood. Not a first choice for reports, but students wanting a basic, friendly introduction to the U.S. will find the work acceptable. ((Reviewed June 1 & 15, 1997)) Copyright 2000 Booklist Reviews
