Content descriptions

General Note: "A Baen Books original."
Summary, etc.: "The universe has shattered into chaos and monsters. Jon, the Leader, is dedicating his life to reuniting the scattered hamlets into a Commonwealth where all humans can live protected against the darkness. But no man can reshape the universe by himself. Jon has Makers to build weapons and clerks to handle the business of government--but he also needs Champions to face the powers of chaos which will not listen to any argument but force. Lord Pal of Beune is one of those Champions. But now Guntram, the man who transformed Pal from an ignorant rube into a bulwark of the Commonwealth, has disappeared. Pal must locate his friend and mentor--and then battle an entity which may be at the core of the splintered universe"--

Drake's The Spark (2017) introduced Pal of Beune, part country bumpkin and part Sir Percival of the Knights of the Roundtable. His Camelot is the Commonwealth, an archipelago kingdom connected by a road that can only be navigated with an animal intermediary. Pal is a Maker, one who can go into a trance-like state to study and mend artifacts found in the dangerous Waste on either side of the road. But he is also a Champion of the Commonwealth, using advanced forms of sword and shield that have more in common with lightsabers than hardened steel. As this installment of the Time of Heroes series begins, Merlinesque Master Guntram has gone missing. Through a series of seemingly disconnected adventures, Pal eventually gains the ability to find and help his master while learning more about the politics of his new home in Dun Add, the capital of the Commonwealth. This endearing knight is surrounded by a wonderful cast of characters in a fabulous world of courtiers, peasants, Beasts, and mysterious Envoys. Drake has imbued Arthurian legend with a convincing sf spin. Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
