|Summary, etc.:|| When Mother Bear and her two cubs leave the den for the first time they practice behaviors including climbing, searching, swimming, digging, and finally sleeping.
- Booklist Reviews : Booklist Monthly Selections - #2 December 2000
Ages 4-6. A mother bear takes her two cubs out on their first excursion from the den so they can experience myriad smells, colors, and sounds, and discover their innate skills. Mother's sharp snort warns them to scramble up a tree. They feast on honey until angry bees swarm them. They dig for roots and reeds. Finally, mother nurses them until they are content and sleepy. Bear cubs are excellent sleepers. Guarnotta's photo-realistic illustrations (the endpapers feature life-size bear faces) are set against stark white backgrounds or surrounded with bright borders, giving the book the feel of a nature guide. The text is wordy, but children will want to study the details of the plants, ladybugs, butterflies, and bees scattered throughout the pages, a valuable dividend in itself. --Shelley Townsend-Hudson Copyright 2000 Booklist Reviews
