Paul is just your typical teen. He starts high school, finds a best friend and girlfriend. Paul experiences a series of firsts; first love, first sexual experience, and first experimentation with drugs. Life seems to be going normally for Paul as a young teen until tragedy strikes, changing his world forever. Pushing away almost everyone who loves him, Paul starts getting more and more addicted to prescription drugs. His mom knows something is going on and will go to any measure to help her son kick his addiction. Paul has to make a series of choices that can break his trust with his mother and with himself. Ropp's youthful voice captures this character perfectly. Ropp expertly executes Paul's slight southern accent, his willful feelings, and feelings of regret. He moves the tone of the story seamlessly from joy to despair and to hopefulness. This Boy is a realistic portrait of how teenage life can be affected by both the good and the bad that surrounds one of the biggest developmentally significant times of teens' lives. Myracle and Ropp together weave a tale of lessons to learn, the reality of drugs, and the strength of family. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
