Five friends—Finn, Ever, Liva, Carter, and Maddy—make their way to a remote cabin for one last weekend of their long-standing role-playing game. Things have been tense for some time now, but they agree to get together and end things congenially before going their separate ways. Not long after the game begins, however, things quickly get out of control, starting with a malfunctioning fireplace, electrocution, runes drawn with what looks like blood, and people disappearing, with clues revealing secrets each of them hoped to keep hidden. Although the inevitable first death in the second act brings some momentum to the slow-build opening chapters, the exposition-heavy third act disrupts the flow. Nijkamp (Before I Let Go, 2018) ensures that her characters are diverse with respect to gender, ability, and class—Finn and Ever are trans, Finn uses crutches, Maddy is neurodivergent, and Liva's family is wealthy. Pacing issues aside, this is an engaging read, providing readers with some solid suspense, and twists to sink their teeth into. Grades 8-12. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
