Reviewed with Heron Marquez's Richard M. Nixon.Gr. 5-7. These volumes from the Presidential Leaders series offer succinct biographical accounts of Truman and Nixon, including their early years, educational experiences, and family lives as well as coverage of their political careers and activities after leaving the White House. Nearly every double-page spread includes one or two well-chosen photographs, reproduced in black and white. Lazo presents a very readable account of the life of Harry Truman, whose humble background once made him seem an unlikely choice as husband for Bessie Wallace, let alone as president of the U.S. Marquez gives an evenhanded overview of Nixon, a man who aspired to public service quite early, dealt with failure as well as success, and became the only president to resign from office. Occasionally, a short feature, appearing on a gray background, fills readers in on topics such as the Vietnam War (in Nixon) and the United Nations (in Truman). Each book ends with a time line, source notes, and bibliographies of sources and recommended books. ((Reviewed April 15, 2003)) Copyright 2003 Booklist Reviews
