Her friends may face turning 60 with trepidation, but retired art teacher Marie Sharp can't wait for the benefitsâfree subway passes and prescriptionsâand the freedom to say no to book clubs and learning Italian. As she approaches her birthday, she keeps a diary in which she comments freely on her life, friends, and adventures. Phillips' narration ranges from exuberant to dramatic, perfectly complementing the first-person diary format. These are, after all, Sharp's unedited responses, and Phillips plays them to the hilt, sometimes tender, sometimes sassy, and sometimes flamboyant. Her husky alto tones fit this curmudgeon-with-a-heart-of-gold to a tee. The novel resembles some British comedies of manners with clever witticisms and smart cultural references; the heartwarming interactions with her first grandchild and close relationship with a dying friend add emotional depth. Sharp's refreshing outlook is hard to resist, no matter your age. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
