Early in her career, TV journalist Ali Reynolds' story on a young man's search for a kidney led to the exposure of a fertility doctor's unethical practice. Now, ten years later, the doctor, in prison for ordering the murder of his wife, has a tattoos of a list of five witnesses he plans to have eliminated. Ali is number 5. The action flashes back to 2003 when a young man who turns out to be the half brother of the kidney seeker offers his kidney to save him. As other half siblings appear and are verified by DNA testing, it becomes clear that the fertility doctor was the unidentified donor. Reader Karen Ziemba narrates with confidence. She makes the Latino prison boss and his enforcers whom the doctor enlists sound threatening and does a nice job differentiating between female characters by age and social class. (The doctor's older mother is particularly convincing). As the deaths pile up, a crew of computer geeks aided by artificial intelligence frantically work to keep Ali safe. Series fans will enjoy this blast from Ali's past. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
