Violet Sterling lives in Burleigh, one of the six great houses in England that are sources of the magic enriching the land when channeled by a Caretaker. When Violet is a child, her father is sentenced to be sealed in the house until he dies, because he tried to find the house's deed. Violet is devastated not only by the loss of home and parent but also her friend Wyn, who will be staying with her father. After seven years, Violet returns home, expecting to take up her role as Caretaker. But Burleigh is almost in ruins; Wyn is standoffish; and if Violet doesn't contain the house's wild magic, it will be burned to the ground. Weymouth captures a feisty character in Violet, a well-bred girl who doesn't take no for an answer. The story, narrated by Violet, has a leisurely start, after which it rises to a nail-biting crescendo. Rich in language and imagery with characters readers want to get to know better, this title's a keeper. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
