Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews - Audio And Video Online Reviews 1991-2018
This vampire romance pits a high-school heroine against ancient evil leavened with smart-alecky dialogue. Could we, by any chance, have stumbled into Buffy's Sunnydale? Alas, no. But, thankfully, the story of Bella and her vampire swain, Edward, provides enough distinctive plot twists and bouts of animal passion to keep listeners riveted. The rain-drenched Washington State setting makes for a moody atmosphere. Kadushin reads the first-person narrative in a teenage voice but doesn't attempt to differentiate the remaining characters. This proves a detriment during Bella's and Edward's ripostes, which should have more tension and spark. But the unique tale is the draw here, and teen listeners will be eager to find out whether Edward will ultimately rescue, resist, or bite his love. —Karen Cruze Grades 7-12.
