Summary, etc.:
The witches, beasties, goblins, and Royals return in this spellbinding conclusion to New York Times best-selling author Megan Shepherd's Grim Lovelies duology. Ever since she discovered her affinity for magic, seventeen-year-old Anouk has been desperate to become a witch. It's the only way to save her friends who, like Anouk, are beasties: animals enchanted into humans. But unlike Anouk, the other beasties didn't make it out of the battle at Montélimar in one piece. With her friends now trapped in their animal forms, Anouk is forced into a sinister deal involving a political marriage with her sworn enemy, a wicked plot to overthrow London's fiercest coven of witches, and a deadly trial of fire to become a witch. The price for power has always been steep in the world of the Haute. Now, it will cost Anouk everything.

Six weeks after the battle that concluded Grim Lovelies (2018), Anouk is the only member of her Beastie family left in human form. Cricket, Luc, and Hunter Black are being held captive as animals by Paris Royal Prince Rennar, who will free them if Anouk agrees to marry him. Though she accepts his proposal, she does so on her own terms, one of which is that she be given the opportunity to walk the Coal Baths that can transform her into a fully fledged witch. As Anouk makes the harrowing journey to the Cottage to undergo its magic trials, an ancient plague, believed to have been unleashed by the Oxford Coven, wreaks havoc on London. Shepherd ably manages to keep tension and steady movement within a plot enriched by political machinations and world building. This is largely due to the countdown of time available to Anouk, Rennar, and the Beastie gang to stop the plague from spreading. Exciting action scenes and unexpected personal revelations and character relationships combine to form a tantalizing conclusion to Shepherd's duology. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
