In Porter's visceral, contemporary, dark fantasy, desperation drives codependent foster siblings to a fae world that becomes a hell of their own making. Ksenia, 18, and Josh, 16, will be separated soon, as their foster parents believe the teens' intense relationship is unhealthy. One night out partying, they meet disturbingly beautiful teenage revelers who lead Josh into the woods. When he returns days later, Ksenia marks something off about him but goes willingly when he says he's found a place for them to be together forever. Porter skillfully delves into their loving but toxic relationship—Ksenia downplays Josh's romantic/sexual interest, unable to hurt him by setting boundaries—while empathizing with both characters. Ksenia's relationship with their friend Lexi, also pulled into the fae world, provides a healthy alternative. The disturbing, predatory fae and their hallucinatory world catalyze Ksenia's struggle to free herself from emotional trauma and self-hatred. This uncomfortable metaphorical tale and its occasionally labored writing will alienate some readers, but those who relish dark stories of overcoming trauma will be intrigued. Grades 10-12.
