Nita escaped the Death Market and entered protective custody with INHUP (International Non-Human Police) in Not Even Bones (2018), but with a video of her self-healing powers on the dark web, she'll never be safe, especially when Fabricio, the boy who betrayed her, is with INHUP too. Mutually assured destruction will only protect them from each other for so long, so Nita naturally strikes first. She murdered hundreds to escape the Death Market—what's one more? When Fabricio survives and retaliates, Nita turns to Kovit, a self-avowed monster, for help. What follows is an unapologetically dark, morally messy thriller of survival, with an ambitious plot that hints at background conflicts among major factions that have yet to emerge. Nita's lack of progress in investigating this tangled web can be frustrating, as much is left for future installments. More effective is Nita's growth as a character as she confronts uncomfortable truths about herself, along with her push-pull dynamic with Kovit, as they build slowly toward a trusting, even loving, relationship. A fascinating addition to a thought-provoking series. Grades 10-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.

Author Notes

Rebecca Schaeffer was born and raised in the Canadian prairies. Her itchy feet took her far from home. You can find her sitting in a cafe on the other side of the world, writing about villains, antiheroes, and morally ambiguous characters.
