*Starred Review* Author of the beloved The Night Circus, Morgenstern has written yet another masterpiece filled with magic and wonder. Multiple tales weave around the son of a fortune teller. Zachary Ezra Rawlins is attending grad school in Vermont and prefers to keep to himself, reading as many books as he can get his hands on. When Zachary stumbles upon a hidden book that includes a story about himself and a moment from his childhood that only he knows about, he embarks on a journey that takes him to underground libraries, secret societies, and doorways that open to different worlds. Alongside the story of Zachary, we follow a pirate, a rabbit, an Owl King, and a woman with amazing pink hair. The work is narrated by an ensemble cast, and each person takes on the separate stories found within the book. The narrators use every bit of their imagination as they delve into the different worlds to convey tales of love, death, time, and fate. Having multiple narrators was such an excellent choice; it helps the listener differentiate between alternating story lines and creates an atmosphere of collaboration in telling the tale. Each voice is as sweet and smooth as honey, making an already enjoyable listen that much more enjoyable. Listeners may desire to repeat every chapter again and again to absorb as much of this book as possible. It is absolutely fantastic. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
