Maren, desperate to save her kidnapped girlfriend, plans to steal one of the emperor's dragons and storm the Aurati stronghold, but her success depends on becoming an apprentice to the emperor's mysterious dragon trainer, which proves to be a dangerous venture.
Raised among the ruins of a conquered mountain nation, Maren dreams only of sharing a quiet life with her girlfriend Kaia. When Kaia is abducted by the Aurati, prophetic agents of the emperor, Maren hatches a plan to steal one of the emperor's coveted dragons and storm the Aurati stronghold. To succeed she must become an apprentice to the the emperor's mysterious dragon trainer. As Maren uncovers dangerous secrets-- rumors of a lost prince, a brewing rebellion, and a prophecy that threatens to shatter the empire-- she also has dreams about a beast deep underground. -- adapted from jacket

Maren is content with her peaceful life in the mountain village of Ilvera, far from the warmongering Zefedi emperor whose ancestors conquered her people and stole their native dragons. Her heartmate, Kaia, wants more; she dreams of becoming one of the emperor's dragon guards. When Kaia is forcibly taken by visiting Aurati seers (the emperor's prophets), Maren concocts an impetuous plan, bolstered by her own seemingly prophetic dreams, to free Kaia with a dragon stolen from the fortress where they are trained. Maren tricks her way into an apprenticeship, learning how the emperor's dragons are controlled, but her friendship with Sev, a friendly but secretive guard, complicates both her plans and her feelings. Wells' satisfying and inclusive debut hits the fantasy trifecta: rich world building, nuanced characters, and deeply impressive dragons. Though the straightforward plotting has few surprises, the story nevertheless unfolds with drama and excitement. Maren's growth from uncertain adventurer to heroic rebel is well earned; her bisexuality is refreshingly presented as unremarkable by her and the cast of mostly nonwhite characters.
