Content descriptions

Summary, etc.:
In 1937, teenaged Theodora Fox and her crush, Huck, set out through the Carpathian Mountains seeking her missing father and the cursed ring of Vlad the Impaler, which he was seeking.
1937. Theodora has read every book in her father's library, has an impressive knowledge of the world's most sought-after relics, and has all the ambition in the world. What she doesn't have is her father's permission to join him in his treasure hunts. His prot©♭g©♭ Huck Gallagher, gets to go instead. When Huck returns from an expedition without her father, the two set out to rescue him. Armed with her father's travel journal, they must find a legendary and magical ring that once belonged to Vlad the Impaler. But in the misty Carpathian Mountains, they aren't the only ones searching for the ring. A secretive occult society is hunting for it... and will go to any lengths to possess it. -- adapted from jacket.

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2019 August #1
Richard Fox is an adventurer and explorer whose 18-year-old daughter, Theodora, would like nothing more than to travel with him—but he insists on leaving her behind. As Theodora wastes away in Istanbul, the last person she ever expects to see appears: Huck, her father's former protégé, exiled when he and Theodora were caught in a compromising position. He brings news that Theodora's father has vanished on a quest to find the missing ring of Vlad the Impaler, and it's up to Theodora and Huck to journey across Romania to find him, ignoring their feelings for each other along the way. But as they venture deeper into the Carpathians, the legends surrounding Vlad's ring—Dracula's ring—grow murkier: there's true dark magic here, and people willing to go to extreme lengths for what they want. Bennett (Serious Moonlight, 2019) sidesteps out of contemporary romance (though this has plenty of steam) and into a richly drawn historical fantasy. Those intrigued by the Dracula name-drop will find this to be fairly vampire-light but a swashbuckling adventure nonetheless. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
