Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 February #2
Baldacci's you can't go home again (but still you do) tale takes FBI agent Arlee Pine back to her Georgia hometown determined to reopen the 30-year-old investigation of her twin sister's abduction and her own near death, uncovering layers of secrets that fictional small towns specialize in offering. Readers Pressley and Brewer impress with the wide range of vocal tones each presents, and Brewer, though with fewer lines, matches Pressley's effectiveness with his grit-tinged baritone depicting crime-fighting Jack Lineberry's various moods and conditions, wounded and able-bodied. Pressley's fluid presentations range from an FBI agent's cool interviewing demeanor to barely controlled fear and sarcastic commentary on less-astute law enforcement types. Various depths of supporting characters' southern accents, delivered with credible cadences and speech patterns, transport listeners to a place of Dixieland and Kudzu.
