Content descriptions

Summary, etc.:
In the days leading up to World War II, orphaned immigrant Ziva must rely on her survival instinct and her magical abilities to outmaneuver ancient Egyptian gods and resurrect a revered queen to stop Nazis intent on global destruction.
Ziva Ellison was abandoned on the streets of New York City at three years old; her parents left her with a promise that she had a great and terrible destiny. Fifteen years later, Ziva is dealing with powers that she doesn't understand and can barely control. Her magic attracts vicious monsters-- and eventually compatriots Sayer and Nasira. They know that Ziva is descended from Egyptian royalty and in possession of ancient magic. They promise to teach Ziva to control her magic and to give her the family she has always yearned for. Darkness is descending on Hitler's Germany, and Ziva is the only one with the power to prevent a global conflict. But the Nazis are hunting for the ultimate weapon-- and Ziva has caught their interest. -- adapted from jacket

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2019 November #1
Eighteen-year-old Ziva grew up an orphan in New York City following the Great War. Between working for pennies at the factory and scraping together any knowledge she can find about her Egyptian heritage at the library, Ziva's goal is simply to survive and keep her mysterious magical powers under the radar. However, when mythical Egyptian creatures begin attacking her and strangers arrive wielding spells and weapons against them, Ziva is forced to unleash her powers for the first time and begin her journey to finding out who she is and where she belongs. Though the character interactions sometimes feel forced, and the plot's pacing is inconsistent, action-packed fight scenes and a high-stakes objective will keep readers invested in what Ziva will do next. Forthright in its commentary on colonization and racism, the deeper themes woven throughout help Moulton's (the Angelfire trilogy) latest stand out from other historical fantasy adventures. Ziva's bold choices in the final pages suggest a sequel worth reading. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
