Content descriptions

Summary, etc.:
"In Kyrkarta, magic--known as maz--was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that's tightly controlled--and, of course, outrageously expensive. Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever. But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they're driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague--and possibly save the world. No pressure"--Jacket flap.

Diz and her friends are in the business of stealing magic—or maz, in this world—and selling it to clients who request their services. It's illegal and very dangerous, but it's worth the steep price people are willing to pay for maz, a resource that was readily available until a disaster wiped out much of the city. What's supposed to be the four friends' last job before they part ways and start college turns out to be a repeat of the catastrophe that killed their parents. Now, on the run from the law, they must get to the bottom of what really happened in order to clear their names and uncover a carefully buried truth. This humorous mix of sf and fantasy explores the complexities of friendship with a diverse cast of strong personalities. Although a bit exaggerated, the youthful lingo of England's (The Disasters, 2018) writing style will be easily accessible for today's teens, balanced out with action that carries on right to the end.
