Reviews

  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 May #1
This narrative noir—accessorized with brand names and glam lifestyle details—offers two starkly contrasting choices of female roles: avenging harpy or hapless victim without much in the way of middle ground. Data-obsessed Shay Miller, inadvertent witness to a young women's gruesome suicide, is slowly enticed into the web spun by a pair of alluring sisters, Cassandra and Jane, leaders of a posse that included the recently deceased Amanda Evinger. The large cast of women who circle mothlike around the pair is handled with workmanlike competence by the dual narrators. The voices they create are age and class appropriate though they make only minor distinctions between the somewhat interchangeable characters, with the exception of Beth who is given a credible Boston accent. Listeners may find that the rapidly shifting viewpoints as well as the frequent integration of lengthy backstories for each of the women require diligent attention. Nevertheless, the carefully constructed plot—relying as it does on strategically withheld details—begs to be unraveled, and the narrators' skillful use of breathless pacing will keep mystery fans tuned-in to the very end.
