Secretary of State Holly Barker turns to her sometimes lover, Stone Barrington, for help when she suspects that there's a Russian mole in her department. Barker, who's toying with a run for the White House, needs to clean things up before she hits the campaign trail. Lawyer Barrington, now a CIA deputy director, is connected to everyone and calls in a few favors to help his friend Holly. His exploits take him to Paris aboard his newly purchased aircraft and land him in the midst of an international incident when one of his newest conquests, Vanessa Baker, is poisoned with a Russian concoction. Reader Roberts does a good job voicing the affluent, arrogant Barrington and a cast of international characters. The plot is buried under an avalanche of sex and conversation, but Roberts makes it all sound almost believable. Fans of the long-running series know what they're there for, and Woods' latest delivers. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
