In the fiftieth entry in this popular series, seemingly nice people are being targeted by deadly chemicals delivered in golden eggs nested in innocuous boxes. Lieutenant Eve Dallas and her sidekick Detective Peabody are on the trail. Clues lead back to a tawny private school, Gold Academy, where the spouses of the victims once worked. Reader Erikson gives Dallas a measured, unemotional tone in line with her pragmatic nature. Peabody has a New York accent (still strong in the late 2000s). Eve's husband, Roarke, sporting a charming Gaelic brogue, continues to help behind the scenes and give Eve some necessary stress relief. Erikson does a good job on various accents (French restaurant hostess, pompous headmistress, soft Spanish of a former student). Although set in future New York City, not much has changed other than cooler technology. There are still the wealthy and the impoverished and lots of secrets. This is a solid entry in a sexy, suspenseful series. Fans will be eager to plug in. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
