Read by Jefferson Mays.
Dozens of identical blue shoes are found in the ocean off the coast of Florida, all with a severed human foot inside. Pendergast reluctantly arrives on Captiva Island and is quickly drawn into the mystery.
- Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 May #1
"There's a freezer full of human feet!" sums up the reason for various law enforcement agencies' cooperation here. FBI Agent Pendergast is included in investigating the mystery of 100 sawed-off feet in identical athletic shoes washing up on the Gulf of Mexico's Sanabel Island. The nauseating/funny scene joins others stemming from the feetâin the water for weeks while providing a veritable buffet for various fish. The stomach-turning autopsy of a hideous sea creature emerging from a foot while squirting foul-smelling slime in the medical examiner's face and all over the nearby detectives quickly becomes a hilarious "Mack Sennet" comedy of chaos. Jefferson Mays's presentation of Pendergast features exquisite enunciation with an occasional British word or expression. He emphasizes the hero's "otherness"; his immaculate suits and quiet, pale countenanceâa stark contrast to other agents like the Coast Guard official whose "old school," insistent use of current charts a half-century old colors his stubborn face and lowers his voice to a growl. Shocking and engaging; perhaps best enjoyed by a niche audience. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly). Preston & Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series, and their recent novels include Verses for the Dead, City of Endless Night, The Obsidian Chamber, and Blue Labyrinth. In addition to his novels and nonfiction works (such as The Lost City of the Monkey God), Preston writes about archaeology for the The New Yorker and National Geographics magazines. Lincoln Child is a Florida resident and former book editor who has published seven novels of his own, including such bestsellers as, Full Wolf Moon and Deep Storm.
