Content descriptions

Summary, etc.:
"Maia Tamarin proved her skill as a tailor when she wove the dresses of the sun, the moon, and the stars, but it will take more than a beautiful gown to hide the darkness rising up within her in the sequel to Spin the Dawn."-- Provided by publisher.
Maia Tamarin has returned from her journey to a kingdom on the brink of war; the boy she loves is gone, and she is forced to don the dress of the sun and assume the place of the emperor's bride-to-be to keep the peace. Ever since she was touched by the demon Bandur, Maia has been changing-- glancing in the mirror to see her own eyes glowing red, losing control of her magic, her body, her mind. But even if she loses herself completely, Maia will stop at nothing to find Edan, protect her family, and bring lasting peace to her country. -- adapted from jacket

In Spin the Dawn (2019), Maia Tamarin successfully sewed the three dresses of Amana, but the cost was high: Maia was cursed by a demon and, now, is slowly becoming one herself. Meanwhile, her attempt to keep peace in A'landi fails as war erupts across the country. The emperor's forces are weak against the rebelling shansen, who struck a deal with a powerful demon to help him take over A'landi. Without the help of Lord Enchanter Edan's magic, it's up to Maia to defeat the shansen's demon and save her home from the ravages of war before she is consumed by the evil growing within her. In this gripping sequel, Maia stands the test of her inner strength as she fights the demonic curse from claiming all that she is. Lim explores the physical and emotional toll of war, yet smoothly carries the themes of family and identity throughout. Elements of Chinese culture enrich the nail-biter plot, and the beautifully written prose delivers a satisfying conclusion to a standout duology. Grades 9-12. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.

Author Notes

ELIZABETH LIM grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, where she was raised on a hearty diet of fairy tales, myths, and songs. Before becoming an author, Elizabeth was a professional film and video game composer, and she still tends to come up with her best book ideas when writing near a piano. An alumna of Harvard College and the Juilliard School, she now lives in New York City with her husband and her daughter.

Spin the Dawn (book 1 in the Blood of Stars duology) was her first original novel, and Unravel the Dusk is her second.
