Based on personal interviews and research, this collective biography of 10 contemporary Native American writers in the U. S. and Canada includes the famousâSherman Alexie, Joseph Bruchac, Louise Erdrichâas well as some of the lesser known. Each chapter profile covers the writer's personal life, work, and traditions. Without reverence, the writers discuss wanting to pass on their legacy as they set the record straight, exposing the stereotypes and distortions of the European American perspective. Marilyn Dumont talks about the "do-gooders" who are continuously trying to "make brown children into white children," and about her double life caught between worlds. Bruchac acknowledges the violence, drug and alcohol abuse, and poverty common to reservation life, even as he celebrates the beautiful land and people. Occasional sidebars cover historical events, including the Trail of Tears and Native Americans' brutal forced assimilation in the residential school system. Part of the Native Trailblazers series, the open book design with small portraits will attract many readers who will use the extensive back matter to find the writers' original works.
