"Documentary director Rees boasts a successful record of TV-book packages on aspects of World War II, such as Auschwitz (2005). His most recent production, a six-part series by the BBC in late 2008 that combines straight documentary and dramatic reconstructions of incidents in Stalin s WWII diplomacy, will be on PBS during spring 2009. For an audience aware of Stalin s ghastly reputation but vague on its historical basis, Rees synthesizes scholarship about the dictator s wartime decisions. From the Nazi-Soviet pact of 1939 to the Potsdam Conference of 1945, he relates Stalin s transformation from ally of Hitler to ally of Churchill and FDR, and emphasizes the fate of Poland in particular. To illustrate that transformation, Rees recounts testimony to events at the negotiating table as well as on the ground––that is, in the case of the latter, the applications of arrest, torture, deportation, and massacre by which Stalin imposed Soviet rule on Poland. Writing accessibly, Rees commendably keeps his reader-viewers in touch with a history inexorably receding from living memory."
