Humorous cartoon illustrations build on what's stated in the text to tell the story here: Matthew's mom may not really have X-ray vision, but she is in fact a neighborhood hero, rescuing the elderly lady next door, who falls from the second story of her house while gardening in her window boxes. The difference in kids' versus adults' perspectives is aptly portrayed: large spreads show what's happening from Matthew's point of view (enhanced by his imagination): "On Monday, he was wrestling with a giant sea monster when Mom shouted from downstairs" shows him in the bathtub with a purple octopus, overflowing bath bubbles all over the place. "How did she know what he was doing?" he wonders, while, in an inset, Mom notices water droplets coming through the ceiling. At last comes a time when Mom is occupied with real-life tasks and isn't paying attention to Matthew, who concludes, "She's just an ordinary mom, like all the rest." He's got a newly revised theory, though: she has eyes in the back of her head. Copyright 2011 Booklist Reviews.
