Amy and Dan Cahill are back, this time fighting Pierce, a power-hungry media mogul with an army of unbreakable thugs in his pocket. Suspecting their strengthening serum has been stolen, the siblings set out to find ingredients for an antidote before Pierce becomes too powerful to defeat. Fans of the original 39 Clues series will be glad to hear narrator Pittu picking up where he left off. Pittu handles the pace of the story—which varies from fast to faster—quite capably. His voices for the Cahills, Nellie, and other familiar characters are consistent with the previous recordings. A highlight of the audio edition is a bonus track in which a reporter attempts to hold Pierce accountable for his totalitarian behavior. This first book in a new spin-off quartet will be a hit with 39 Clues fans who are hungry for more adventure. Grades 4-6. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
