Summary, etc.: | "In Norse Mythology, Gaiman fashions primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds; delves into the exploits of the deities, dwarves, and giants; and culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and the rebirth of a new time and people. Gaiman stays true to the myths while vividly reincarnating Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin's son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki, the son of a giant, a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator."--Container. |

*Starred Review* Prepare to be transported into the realm of the ancient Norse gods, and who better to tell their tales than Gaiman? Much of Gaiman's massively popular canon can be traced back to all things mythic, and the litany of his literary awards is long, including Hugo, Bram Stoker, Nebula, Newbery, and Carnegie. Gaiman has also carved out an impressive reputation for his storytelling skills, earning many honors for his narration. This paean to the Nordic gods will resonate with his many fans, including those enjoying the television serialization of his American Gods, as well as fans of Marvel Comic's Thor film series. Written in a conversational tone, this retelling honors the mythic Norse background with a modern-day accent all Gaiman's own as the gods of Asgard take on an intimate, breezy informality. A lighthearted attitude prevails as Gaiman colors dialogue with audible, British-dialect-tinged characterization: Thor's innocent dimwittedness; Loki's devious spitefulness; Odin's world-weary, fatherly wisdom. There are quiet moments, as Gaiman conjures the poetic majesty of the source material for the Icelandic Prose Edda, while brutal episodes of death and destruction are voiced with dark intensity. This top-notch audio harkens back to oral tradition, with a twenty-first-century sensibility, and is a truly all-ages production. Copyright 2019 Booklist Reviews.
