In 1916, war has changed the lives of Lady Montfort and her partner-in-crime-solving, senior servant Mrs. Jackson. At Lady Montfort's urging, Haversham Hall has been turned into an auxiliary hospital, with Mrs. Jackson its quartermaster. Lady Montfort's concerns that a pending War Office review might recommend closing the hospital are intensified when a much-decorated soldier, amnesiac Sir Evelyn Bray, is murdered in the kitchen garden. Police arrest first the soldier who found the body, and thenâafter a second soldier is killedâan elderly neighbor who rails against the men being treated at Haversham Hall for shell shock as cowards. Lady Montfort and Mrs. Jackson, however, have other ideas. Meanwhile, Lady Montfort worries about son Harry, a pilot recovering from injury who's having brandy for breakfast; daughter Althea, a Land Army Girl smitten with a soldier; and daughter Verity, who's in Paris to be near her husband when he's on leave.
