In this cautionary tale based on events in the Territory of New Mexico, circa 1850–1912, corrupt politics and flagrant greed lead to all-out war. In the 1870s, with statehood decades away, a group of powerful land speculators called the Santa Fe Ring dominates both the governor's office and the Republican Party, allowing favoritism to undermine local government and destroy honest competition. In Colt's account, a newcomer, John Tunstall, decides to end the monopoly of merchant John Dolan by opening a better store in Liberty, and Dolan tries to ruin Tunstall while the sheriff turns his back. Then Tunstall is killed by Dolan's hired guns, drawing Tunstall's men, including Billy the Kid, into violent confrontation. Colt adds convincing dialogue and physical descriptions—but not a lot of life—to the large cast of real and fictional characters. Readers looking for fast action and a complicated plot will find both in this novel and Colt's previous Bounty of Vengeance (2016). Copyright 2018 Booklist Reviews.
