Content descriptions

Summary, etc.: "Summertime in Bleak Harbor means tourists, overpriced restaurants, and the Dragonfly Festival. One day before the much-awaited and equally chaotic celebration, Danny Peters, the youngest member of the family that founded the town five generations ago, disappears. When Danny's mother, Carey, and stepfather, Pete, receive a photo of their brilliant, autistic, and socially withdrawn son tied to a chair, they fear the worst. But there's also more to the story. Someone is sending them ominous texts and emails filled with information no one else should have. Could the secrets they've kept hidden--even from one another--have led to Danny's abduction? As pressure from the kidnapper mounts, Carey and Pete must face their own ugly mistakes to find their son before he's taken from them forever"--Dust jacket.

At the center of this intricately plotted novel is Danny Peters, beloved only child of Carey Bleak Peters. Just shy of his sixteenth birthday, on a day he was supposed to go fishing with his stepfather, Pete, Danny, who is on the autism spectrum, disappears, and all signs point to a kidnapping. Early on, the reader knows that Carey's wealthy boss, Randall Pressman, whom she's blackmailing after their one-night stand months earlier, is behind the disappearance, working with Danny's biological father, who's just out of prison. But plans go awry when a skilled hacker called Jeremiah takes control and increases ransom demands. Money can be found: from Pete, from Pete's former boss from when he was a successful trader in Chicago, even from Carey's mother, Serenity Meredith Maas Bleak, possibly the wealthiest women in the state of Michigan, who's offering her estate to the town of Bleak Harbor under certain conditions, thus bypassing her daughter and son, the town mayor. Gruley gradually reveals connections between characters and their secrets as he builds suspense in this impressively constructed plot about attaining justice for those once wronged.
