- Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2019 February #2
PIs Hap and Leonard are driving home from a surveillance gig on a stormy night when a young woman stumbles into the road, barely dressed and bleeding badly from her mouth. Their trip to the hospital is hampered by the biblical delugeâand by heavily armed pursuers. The twelfth novel in the series is essentially an extended action sequence: as wild weather and flooding overwhelm Hap and Leonard's East Texas town, it soon becomes apparent that a local crime kingpin is willing to go to war to take out Nikki, the young woman. Outnumbered and outgunned as they're chased from place to place, Hap and Leonard can count on just one advantage: the elephant of surprise. Lansdale's narrative voice is as wonderful as ever, as is the banter between the mismatched best friends as they punctuate the violence with drolly mundane observations. While this lacks the deeper explorations of race in 2018's stellar Jackrabbit Smile, and Nikki's character isn't exactly memorable, it's always a pleasure to spend time with Hap and Leonard, even in the worst of circumstances.
