  • Booklist Reviews : Booklist Reviews 2020 November #1
This lively book of photographs documents Barack Obama's political life in 2004, when photographer Katz, fresh out of college, joined Obama's U.S. Senate campaign, and in 2008, when Obama ran for and won the presidency. Though most of the never-before-seen images are from fundraisers, rallies, debates, and conventions, they capture quiet moments of intimacy, reflection, and joy: the future president with his three-year-old daughter on his hip during a 2004 photo shoot, laughing with wife Michelle backstage at the 2004 DNC, greeting Joe Biden with a hug and a smile as rain pours down on them at a 2008 rally. Katz's pictures are professional but casual, betraying his unique relationship with his subject: Katz was a political photographer but also Obama's personal aide, driving Obama across Illinois during the campaign for Senate. That closeness is evident in the funny faces Sasha and Malia make for Katz's camera, and it allows views of Obama on and off stage. Whether gearing up for a speech, playing basketball, or sitting with his family in an RV, Obama looks presidential in them all. Copyright 2020 Booklist Reviews.
