Series information from Goodreads.com
A sequel to "Old Bones" finds FBI agent Corrie Swanson and Santa Fe archaeologist Nora Kelly investigating the mummified corpse of a long-dead victim who died in agony while holding a mysterious sixteenth-century gold cross.
A mummified corpse, over half a century old, is found in the cellar of an abandoned building in a remote New Mexico ghost town. Junior FBI Agent Corrie Swanson needs to ID the body, and determine cause of death. When archaeologist Nora Kelly lends her expertise to the investigation, they uncover that the deceased died in a fetal position, skin coming off in sheets, a rictus of horror frozen on his face. And hidden on the corpse is a sixteenth century Spanish gold cross of immense value.-- adapted from jacket

In Old Bones (2019), Preston and Child teamed up supporting characters from other books, FBI agent Corrie Swanson and archaeologist Nora Kelly. Their first case was a little rockyâthanks to personality conflicts between the sleuthsâand this new outing shows every sign of continuing that trend. After a near-fatal incident during a hostage situation, Swanson, who's still only eight months out of the academy, is assigned what should be a straightforward case: human remains have been found at a New Mexico ghost town, and she simply needs to determine whether homicide was involved. She turns to Kelly, a senior curator at the Santa Fe Archaeological Institute. Reluctantly, Kelly agrees to help out, not knowing she is putting her life at risk (again). The authors bring the same rigorous plotting and deft characterizations to this novel as they do with their Special Agent Pendergast books (happily, Pendergast makes an appearance here), and the Kelly and Swanson pairing is certainly engaging. It seems the duo might be settling in for a good, long run. Copyright 2021 Booklist Reviews.
The thrillers of Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child "stand head and shoulders above their rivals" (Publishers Weekly). Preston and Child's Relic and The Cabinet of Curiosities were chosen by readers in a National Public Radio poll as being among the one hundred greatest thrillers ever written, and Relic was made into a number-one box office hit movie. They are coauthors of the famed Pendergast series and their recent novels include Crooked River, Old Bones, Verses for the Dead, and City of Endless Night.
