Content descriptions

Summary, etc.:
"Rock Paper Scissors is the latest exciting domestic thriller from the queen of the killer twist, New York Times bestselling author Alice Feeney. Think you know the person you married? Think again ... Things have been wrong with Mr and Mrs Wright for a long time. When Adam and Amelia win a weekend away to Scotland, it might be just what their marriage needs. Self-confessed workaholic and screenwriter Adam Wright has lived with face blindness his whole life. He can't recognize friends or family, or even his own wife. Every anniversary the couple exchange traditional gifts--paper, cotton, pottery, tin--and each year Adam's wife writes him a letter that she never lets him read. Until now. They both know this weekend will make or break their marriage, but they didn't randomly win this trip. One of them is lying, and someone doesn't want them to live happily ever after. Ten years of marriage. Ten years of secrets. And an anniversary they will never forget"-- Provided by publisher.

The domestic thriller goes Gothic in Feeney's fourth novel, following His and Hers (2020). London couple Adam and Amelia Wright win a get-away to a destination in the Scottish Highlands. But their accommodations turn out to be a dilapidated converted chapel, complete with crypt, bell tower, and a creepy caretaker. This isn't a couple who can make the best of things; as we learn from their juxtaposed first-person narratives. Instead they have a bog of secrets, suspicions, and bad blood between them. The suspense hinges on who may be about to murder whom as the Wrights try to survive each other, and a possible force just inside or outside the creaky chapel. The scares and twists get a bit over-played, and the device of including Amelia's never-sent anniversary letters to her husband as a way of giving background is awkward. Still, this tale, complicated by Adam's face blindness, which renders even his wife unrecognizable to him, will give readers plenty of jolts along the way. Copyright 2021 Booklist Reviews.
