520 . ‡aThe Civil War had ended and the wide open West beckoned with the promise of adventure and homesteading land. Answering the call, Herman Atwood, a young man of 23, boarded a train in Vermont, leaving behind his family who had been in America since the 1600s. Little did he know a chance encounter with Alice Westcot in Alexandria, Minnesota would shape his grand ambitions in unforeseeable ways. Herman and Alice began married life in Dakota Territory in 1888, homesteading with youthful hope yet struggling against the arid land. Soon they uprooted, pouring hard work and tears into a milling business in Alexandria. But now they struggled against each other, with an audience of four young sons and a daughter. Catastrophic events dogged them at every twist and turn, leaving no family member unscathed.
